Maldives Sunrise | Komandoo

sunrise over water villas on the island of komandoo in the maldives

The boardwalk and water villas here are on the beautiful resort island of Komandoo in the Lhaviyani Atoll of The Maldives. Sunrise and sunset times do not vary much throughout the year and you don’t have to get up too early to see the dawn. With sunrise at around 7am, I still had a lie-in compared to a normal day back home, before getting up to capture this gorgeous tranquil scene. Even at this relatively late sunrise time, Komandoo is virtually empty of people so it’s a great time to be out with the camera.

Komandoo is the sister island of Kuredu and is much smaller and quieter. making it ideal for couples wanting a relaxing break. Like many islands in The Maldives, both Komandoo and Kuredu are popular honeymoon destinations.

La Voix du Nord | Grand Place, Lille

La Voix du Nord in Place du General de Gaulle, or Grand PLace, Lille in northern France

When Sally and I visited Lille, in northern France, in March this year, it rained – a lot! Still, wet cobble-stoned streets and squares, such as La Place du General de Gaulle, provide interesting photo opportunities. This square, also known as Grand Place, is right in the centre of the city and is certainly lives up to that name. This photo was taken while we sheltered in the doorway of a bookshop and waited for a break in the showers.

La Voix du Nord (The Voice of the North) is a daily regional newspaper, which started in 1941 as an underground publication for the resistance, during the second world war. The headquarters is here in Lille in this art deco building, dating from 1932.

Millennium Bridge | London

millenium bridge, river thames and st paul

The Millennium Bridge is a steel suspension foot bridge across the River Thames in London. It was opened in the year 2000 and then closed two days later, after being declared unsafe due to excessive swaying when a large number of people were walking across it. After almost two years of modifications to steady it, it re-opened in 2002. The bridge crosses the Thames from just in front of the Tate Modern on the south bank to near St Paul’s Cathedral on the north of the river.

This photo is a four minute long exposure, which has smoothed out the movement in the river and the clouds.

Bavaro Sunset

sunset on the beach at the catalonia resort in bavaro, dominican republic

This was the scene looking the other way to my previous photo of the beach at Bavaro in the Dominican Republic. As Bavaro is on the eastern side of the island, near Punta Cana, the sun sets on the other side and, from the colours in those clouds in the distance, it looks like they had quite a spectacular sunset over there on this day. Those ominous looking clouds just above me were quite typical of our time in the Dominican Republic, especially at this time of the day.
