Manhattan | New York City

the view from top of the rock towards the empire state building and downtown manhattan in new york city

The 70th floor observatory, known as Top of the Rock, at the Rockefeller Centre in  Midtown Manhattan offers some of the best views that you can find of New York City. This shot was taken late on a sunny September afternoon, looking towards downtown with the Empire State building dominating the view.

The Rockefeller Centre was built between 1930 and 1939 by the famous New York businessman John D. Rockefeller and covers 22 acres of the Midtown area of Manhattan. The art deco style complex is one of the most popular attractions in New York City and has featured in many films and televisions shows over the years. Situated between 48th and 51st streets, and Fifth and Sixth Avenue, it is ideally placed to offer great views of Manhattan Island and beyond.

Lake Crescent Kayaks | Olympic National Park, USA

lake crescent with kayaks on the shore in the foreground

The day we spent around Lake Crescent, in the Olympic National Park, was mostly wet and I believe that is typical of this part of Washington State. There were a few breaks in the clouds though and I captured this shot of canoes on the shore of the lake during one of them. I would imagine it is very pleasant sitting on that pier and watching the sun set over Lake Crescent on a warm summer day, but on this day the inside of the very attractive lodge was a more welcome site.

Wedding Breakfast on the Beach | Kuredu, Maldives

wedding breakfast table on the beach at kuredu in the maldives

Back to the Maldives today and this is the table set ready for a romantic evening meal on the beach for a bride and groom after their wedding on the island of Kuredu. I had been out shooting the sunset (of course), when I saw the hotel staff preparing this table, with cushion seats and surrounded by lanterns. I waited for them to finish and wandered over as the wedding manager was taking pictures with a small digital camera and she told me that she couldn’t get a good shot with it. I asked if I could take one and she said that I would have to hurry, as she had to go and bring the wedding couple out for their meal. I said if she gave me a minute to set up my tripod and take the photo, I thought it would be a good one and I’d be happy to send her a copy … so she did, and I did and she loved it.

Sicilian Sunset | Isola delle Femmine

sunset at isola delle femmine near palermo in sicily

Isola delle Femmine (Island of Women) is a town on the north coast of Sicily, just to the west of Palermo, which gets its name from this small uninhabited island. The shot was taken at sunset from the tip of a small peninsula between the towns port and the beach which stretches along towards Capaci. There is some doubt as to the origin of the name Isola delle Femmine. Some say that the island was a womens only prison in the 16th century, while another claim is that it was a refuge for the women and children of the town during a plague in the 19th century. Whatever the history of the island, it makes a very pretty subject for photographs.
